Katarzyna Boyanowsky (nee Choma)
Katarzyna (variously spelt as Katarina or Kay) Boyanowsky was born in 1907 in the village of Ostraszynze (or Ostrasensye), Galicia, in the Austro-Hungarian Empire (now western Ukraine). After hearing much about the opportunities and riches to be had in Canada, Katarzyna left Europe aboard the Canadian Pacific Line's ship, the S.S. Montcalm, arriving in Quebec City on August 16, 1929. From there she travelled by train to Winnipeg, Manitoba where she worked in the home of a wealthy Jewish family who had sponsored her passage. In 1936, Katarzyna moved to Red Lake with her husband Dmitri and their daughter Lesia. She remained in the area for nearly 50 years until her death in 1985.

Dmitri (Mike) Boyanowsky
Mike Boyanowsky was born in the county of Kitsman, district of Bukovina, province of Chernovitz, in western Ukraine on October 13, 1908. He grew up working on his parents farm until he immigrated to Canada at the age of 19. At the time, Ukraine was ruled by Romania, so his immigration records give his name in its Romanian translation, Dumitru Boianovschi. Mike came to Red Lake in 1936 to find work in the mines. He later became a certified mechanic and from 1945 until his death in 1973, held various positions at local mines. His final place of employment was Griffith Ore Mine near Ear Falls.
