Herwig Feigl
Herwig Feigl was born on March 22, 1934 in Vienna, Austria. His enduring memories of war-time were mostly of the fear he felt and the death of his father in 1943. By Grade 11, Herwig left school to work and help support his mother and younger siblings. While working as a professional painter and decorator in Enns, Austria, he met his future wife, Aniela. He and Aniela immigrated to Canada in 1954 and were married that same year in Red Lake. Herwig was the first of his family to leave Europe. Eventually Herwig developed a deep appreciation for the north and enjoyed a successful career in gold mining and as an assay chemist.

Piotr Mandzij
Piotr Mandzij was born in Lwow, Poland on July 10, 1903. He worked as a carpenter until a horrific saw machinery accident left him an amputee, challenging him to live without his right arm. Much hardship was also brought upon Piotr and his family during the Second World War, including the loss of a son and being forced to live in displaced persons camps. Piotr seemed to find happiness after immigrating to Canada in 1954. He was lucky to find a job working in the mill of the Madsen Mine and remained there until his retirement. He lived the rest of his life in the Red Lake District until his death in 1991.
