The Kostynuks
Angelina Kostynuk (nee Onufryczuk)
Angelina Kostynuk was born on November 16, 1891 in Chernovitz, district of Bukovina, Ukraine (the same city as her future husband, Leo). She immigrated to Canada in 1913 and moved to Chapleau, Ontario where her and Leo were married that August. "There were a lot of Ukrainians in Chapleau and she made friends right away," remembers son Bill. The Kostynuks moved to Red Lake around 1926, Leo came first and Angelina and their children followed. Angelina was the quintessential house wife, always busy caring for her children, garden, and home, and making clothing, knitting, and baking. She died of cancer in 1942, just two months shy of her 50th birthday.

Leon (Leo) Kostynuik (Kostynuk)
Leo Kostynuik (last name shortened to Kostynuk) was born in the city of Chernovitz, district of Bukovina, Ukraine on December 9, 1889. He immigrated alone to Canada sometime between 1907 and 1910. Leo had been given farm land to clear and settle on near Gimli, Manitoba but decided to forgo that venture and instead went to work for the Canadian Pacific Railway in Montreal. Leo came to Red Lake in its early days, around the time the Howey Gold Mines was beginning construction, and before any community was established. He worked hard to bring his wife and family to join him, and remained the rest of his life in the district.
